PAINTING FUNDAMENTALS
Learn practical painting methods & techniques essential to the handling of oil paints. Students will be introduced to characteristics of and use of opaque and transparent pigments, painting mediums, glazing, colour mixing and selection, types of brushes, preparation of painting surfaces, paint application, including blending, glazing, scumbling, wet in wet, impasto and more.

Ā HOW TO USE COLOUR
Learn colour skills using colour combinations and adjustments to create depth and form. Students will understand the colour, learn about complimentary, simultaneous and analogous contrasts and explore warm and cool colour schemes. There will be a particular emphasis on the art of Fauvism, that included modern artists who used brilliant colour contrasts in their paintings.

DRAWING THE HUMAN HEAD
Working with charcoal and graphite and learning to āsculptā and give the head dimension through drawing. Students are taught basic structures of the human head, underlying muscles, what changes when the face takes on expression, how to draw hair and using light for emphasis and expression. Particular emphasis will be on how to draw eyes, noses and mouths.

LIFE DRAWING
An Intensive course developing skills and confidence in drawing using a range of contemporary and traditional approaches & media. Working from the undraped model, using charcoal, erasers, tone and line, participants will create quick drawings leading to more extended drawing. Excellent folio preparation for visual art and design courses.

FIGURATION TO ABSTRACTION
Students will be guided through structured processes using painting and drawing to develop their own abstract images from figurative sources.Ā The point of this workshop is to discover exciting ways to transform visual subjects and perceptual information to gain an understanding about essential relationships between the seen and the unseen. The course is focused on a practical methodology for exploring visual transmutation, including experimentation around conversion, reinvention and transposition. Classes deliver approaches that introduce, motivate, and enhance picturing skills, with fluidity of movement between abstraction and figuration.

VENETIAN UNDERPAINTING & GLAZING
An oil painting workshop over 2 days emphasising Venetian Underpainting and Glazing Techniques. The class will look at grounds, materials and methods employed by these artists. Each participant will be painting from a āfrozenā piece of drapery constructed in class. Day one will be spent completing the drapery component with glazing commencing on day two.

DRAWING WITH SILVER & LEAD
This intensive observational drawing class will focus on the acquisition of drawing skills. Primarily we will be working with graphite pencils, silver points, sandpaper, kneadable erasers and blending stumps. This class is appropriate for students who want to tighten their abilities to observe light accurately, measure objects carefully, and learn useful rendering techniques to create convincing form. Some artists considered in this class include: Walter Murch, Paul Cadmus, Gerry Bergstein & Escher.
